Shopping in Singaraja Marketplace

By the time I returned from the hot springs, I barely had enough time to shower and get ready before Wayan arrived for the next part of the day’s adventure.

Shopping at Singaraja Open Air Marketplace

I still did not really know where we were going.

All I knew was that I had mentioned wanting to find baby clothes, and Wayan confidently assured me he knew exactly where to take me.

Soon we were once again riding through Bali on the back of his motorbike, heading toward the nearby city of Singaraja.

The ride itself was enjoyable, weaving through villages and busy streets while the late afternoon light softened everything around us.

Eventually we arrived at a huge marketplace unlike anything I had seen so far in Bali.

The baby clothing section was located inside a large open-air building filled with narrow walkways and countless little vendor stalls packed tightly together. It reminded me somewhat of Warorot Market in Chiang Mai, although this one felt even more crowded and chaotic.

Everywhere I looked people were buying, selling, carrying baskets, shouting prices, and moving through impossibly tight spaces.

Outside the building the marketplace continued into a sprawling fresh fruit and vegetable market overflowing into the surrounding streets.

One thing I noticed immediately was how different many of the foods looked compared to Thailand. Some were familiar, while others I had no idea how to identify.

The market was absolutely jam packed with people, scooters, baskets of produce, and vendors selling colorful sweets and snacks.

At one point Wayan stopped to call his wife to ask if she wanted him to bring home any fruit for an upcoming Hindu celebration.

I had heard there would soon be a major ceremony taking place somewhere on the island, one of the regular religious celebrations woven into daily Balinese life.

Even in the middle of the crowded marketplace, religion and tradition never seemed very far away in Bali.

That was something I kept noticing over and over during my travels there.

These wallpapers were photographed during my travels across Bali, from the quiet beaches of Lovina to the streets of Ubud, the terraced rice fields of the countryside, and the tropical coastline of Sanur.
